Farming and Animal Husbandry

Farming and Animal HusbandryVegetable farming is always present at the prison, the aim of which is as a rehabilitative tool to equip prison inmates with skills as well as a means of self-sufficiency as far as the provision of dietary for the institution. Equipped with skills in farming, inmates have something which can serve as a means of providing for themselves and their families when they are released.

The prison facility has seen the favour of the Chinese Mission here in Dominica who have added passion fruit farming to the prison farm. This will be a means of providing the institution with refreshments. Inmates are being taught the right method of caring and production of passion fruit, in the hopes that they will be able to apply this training at the point of return to society thus becoming more self sufficient.

The livestock section of the Prison is preparing to expand to not only provide meat for the prison population but also supply the abattoir with pork and chicken. The Prison Service is also in the process of developing breeding stock (our piglets) to sell to local farmers.
